Creating a Trauma Informed Organization

Creating trauma informed systems through an individualized approach.
Picture

Background

Evidence-informed self-assessment created by the National Child Traumatic Stress Network, Treatment and Services Adaptation Center for Resilience, Hope and Wellness in Schools with the National Center for School Mental Health. Crafted from a framework pioneered by RAND and UCLA, that emphasizes anonymity, interactive data collection, participant feedback and statistical determination.

The 8 domains this assessment focuses on allows for evaluation in many important areas that at times can be overlooked. It examines the strengths and needs of both the larger organizational system, and individual systems. By completing this within
groups, we are able to start incorporating the most important pieces of what drives a trauma-informed organization, such as collaboration, transparency, empowerment, voice and choice while providing direction to action planning to continue this growth.

Eight key domains:
1) Whole school safety planning
2) Whole school prevention planning
3) Whole school trauma programming
4) Classroom strategies
5) Prevention/early intervention trauma programming
6) Targeted trauma-informed programming
8) Community engagement

Main goal is to assist in developing data-driven goals and action steps at the school, classroom, student staff and family/community levels.

Affirm

This phase holds significance as it facilitates education and discussion surrounding the six pillars that define a trauma-informed organization.

Its aim is to assess an organizations current standing and resources to be prepared to address any identified shortcomings effectively.

This phase fosters candid conversations about the potential risks an organization may face if proactive measures are not taken. It's crucial for staff to witness tangible steps being taken to enhance the organizational climate following their participation in completing the assessment.

Our consultants will meet with the appropriate staffing to provide education and discussion around how to make this as successful as possible, and explain the ongoing process organizations are committing too.

Should an organization find itself not ready, alternative consulting options are available to
aid in developing steps forward.

Assessment

Group Sizes:
  • Large groups can prevent empowerment by not allowing enough time for individuals to speak.
  • Too many in a group, or not enough can lead to individuals not feeling psychologically safe to speak up.
  • Having multiple options for staff available to join with co-workers that feel safe

Facilitators:

  • Ensuring this individual provides a sense of safety and trustworthiness by respecting confidentiality and all opinions.
  • Have education and understanding of how cultural, historical and gender issues may need to be validated.

Environment
  • Looking at physical surroundings and if the set up could be activating
  • Ensuring there are no distractions that can pull away from the individual feeling present and calm

Planning

During this stage, our consultants are pinpointing key areas of concern that could contribute to turnover, burnout, vicarious trauma, and other challenges. We then translate these identified priorities into actionable recommendations grounded in research and evidence-based approaches. Our focus is on integrating the principles of trauma-informed care to help your organization craft an initial action plan aimed at fostering better staff support, enhancing work quality, and mitigating turnover and burnout-related expenses. This process typically spans about 30 days and entails both development and presentation to your leadership for review.

The action plans can be divided into committees comprising staff representatives, with our consultants offering guidance to facilitate progress. It's crucial to break down these plans into achievable goals and objectives, allowing your organization to acknowledge each
milestone and facilitate effective implementation.

Implementation

During this period, our consultants engage with committees or pre-existing teams to assess the progress of action plans.

They aid in pinpointing the support systems required within the environment to ensure the successful attainment of goals, which may include updates to policies and procedures as deemed necessary. Additionally, our consultant team offers direction on leveraging the collected data to prepare for review later in the process.

Follow up, the fidelity Review

The final phase of our process holds significant importance as it facilitates not only the measurement of progress but also enables reflection. It often reveals overlooked strengths among team members or areas missed earlier in the action planning process. This provides the opportunity to adjust needs and leverage strengths to advance goals further.

Simultaneously, our consultants initiate planning sessions with staff to transition the project to the organization's ownership. This fosters individuals' confidence in leading change, equipping them with the knowledge of available resources and strategies to keep
committees or groups organized and motivated.
